Jocelyn Coates is a doctoral student and instructor in the Department of Women’s Studies. Jocelyn’s research explores the ways that black/white interraciality often serves as spectacle in public space. More specifically, she is working to examine black/white interraciality in ways that push back against surveillant, biopolitical logics, and to consider what interraciality means beyond dominant, over-simplified narratives of progress and/or disaster. Trained in qualitative methods, Jocelyn conducts in-depth interviews and utilizes methodological interventions-such as transcription and coding practices-that work to animate text as multi-sensory and embodied, and to position interview subjects as knowers and co-producers of the analysis.

More broadly, Jocelyn’s research interests include critical race studies, black feminism, and queer of color critique. Jocelyn has taught both of the department’s Introduction to Women’s Studies courses, WMST 250: Women, Art and Culture, and WMST 200: Women and Society.
