Sarah Scriven is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Women’s Studies at the University of Maryland. Her research interests include Black Women’s Studies, Black Feminist intellectual history, feminist pedagogy and visual culture analysis. She earned a Master’s of Arts with distinction in Women’s and Gender Studies from DePaul University and BA from Duke University in Women’s Studies, with a minor in African and African American Studies. Sarah’s Master’s thesis explored the life of 20th Century civil rights activist and writer, Pauli Murray, through Murray’s archived portraits, and elucidated Murray’s political investments in queer world-making. Prior to her MA program, Sarah worked as a program coordinator at the Pauli Murray Center for History and Social Justice in Durham, NC.
Sarah has been a leader in numerous organizations promoting gender and racial equity. Most recently, Sarah was the graduate assistant for Take Back the Halls, a teen dating violence prevention program in Chicago high schools. She was a graduate assistant at DePaul’s Women’s Center. She advocated for Women’s Rights in global and local levels as a leader in the Cities for CEDAW campaign and served as a speaker at the UN Commission on the Status of Women conference. Sarah has received numerous awards and scholarships for her commitment to education and social equity, including Duke University’s Reginaldo Howard Memorial Scholarship, DePaul University’s Ballenger Memorial Scholarship, and the WomenNC fellowship.
