Harriet Tubman Day “Reclaiming Histories | Creating Futures"

Harriet Tubman Day “Reclaiming Histories | Creating Futures"

College of Arts and Humanities | The Harriet Tubman Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Thursday, March 10, 2022 12:00 pm - 2:30 pm Zoom

The faculty, staff, and students of the Harriet Tubman Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies invite you to join us for our commemoration of Harriet Tubman Day and the bicentennial of Harriet Tubman’s birth.

Speakers include Ms. Ernestine (Tina) Wyatt, a descendant of Harriet Tubman and a UMD alum, who will bring remarks on behalf of the Tubman descendants.

This year’s theme, “Reclaiming Histories | Creating Futures,”—considers Harriet Tubman’s historical presence in Dorchester County, Maryland, before her self-emancipation and Tubman’s ongoing legacy towards “freedom” as a daily politic and practice.

We will be joined by Dr. Julie Schablitsky, Chief Archeologist with the Cultural Resources Division of the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration, whose team has been excavating the site on which Ben Ross’s (Tubman’s father) cabin stood.

We also invite you to think about Harriet Tubman’s present and future legacy as we talk with activists in Baltimore, Maryland, who are working with communities to build worlds that are free from the effects of gentrification, poor health services, weakened educational outcomes.  The day will also highlight how WGSS students are taking up Harriet Tubman’s legacy as part of a practice of public pedagogy.

Registration is required. Please visit ter.ps/wgssTubman22 to receive the attendance link.

Join us for as long as you are able, please check our website for schedule and speaker updates.
