2026 PhD Application Cycle Now Open

Apply for the Ph.D. in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies

The Harriet Tubman Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies is excited to announce that applications for admission to the PhD program in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies are now open for the 2026-2027 application cycle. The department enjoys a global reputation for new methodologies and exciting new research. Our students and alumni are building new fields of study and reimagining the future of feminist thought, within and beyond academia.  All applications (including recommendation letters) must be submitted through the University of Maryland Graduate School Application no later than Tuesday, November 17, 2026.

Those interested in applying for a PhD are encouraged to review all program requirements and application guidelines. The department does not directly admit students to an individual faculty advisor. You do not need to contact prospective advisers prior to submitting your application. All questions about the program and expressions of interest should be sent to wgss@umd.edu.  Please note most faculty are not available to correspond with applicants during the application period and application materials including your CV, statement of purpose, and transcripts should not be emailed directly to individual faculty members or directly to the department. Only applications submitted through the official portal will be reviewed.
