Effective in Spring 2026, advising is available now!
The Harriet Tubman Department is happy to announce modifications to the LGBTQ Studies Minor to stay on the cutting edge of the field!
The LGBTQ minor in the Harriet Tubman Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies is a 15 credit program providing students an opportunity for interdisciplinary study of the lives, experiences, identities, and representations of LGBTQ people. This course of study gives students solid grounding in the major concepts and methods that define studies of sex, gender, and gender identity today.
The LGBTQ Studies minor includes:
- 15 credits of coursework; at least 9 of which must be at the 300 or 400 level
- 6 credits of foundational coursework: LGBT 200 Intro to LGBTQ Studies and LGBT 310 Transgender Studies
- 6 credits of LGBT Elective coursework, at least 3 of which must be 300 or 400 level
- 3 credits of capstone coursework - LGBT 488 or other approved 400 level LGBTQ coursework
The LGBTQ Studies minor supports student development of skills in critical analysis, writing, communication, and collaboration. It prepares students to be unique candidates in a diversity of career paths, including government, policy, non-profit and advocacy work, communications, medicine, science, and technology, as well as for advanced graduate study in the social sciences, law, and the humanities.
The minor in LGBTQ Studies pairs well with a wide variety of majors at the University of Maryland across all the Colleges and Schools. It’s an especially good match for students in STEM and Health majors who want to work with the LGBTQ population in their future careers. Students in ANTH, CINE, COMM, EDUC, ENGL, GVPT, HIST, PLCY, PSYC, SOCY will all find connections between the work in their majors and the LGBTQ Studies minor that expand their opportunities.
The 15 credits in the minor can also be incorporated into a WGSS BA for any student who wants to become a major.
