Career Development: What Can You Do With a WGSS Education?

The Harriet Tubman Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies held a virtual career development panel on Friday, March 26: “What Can You Do With a WGSS Education?” Kate Juhl of the University Career Center at ARHU moderated the panel of 5 recent UMD WGSS alums. Samantha Fleischer is the Development Associate at Development Resources Inc (DRi), Rachel Greenberg is the Executive Assistant to the President at Feminist Majority Foundation, Charissa Powell is the Student Sucess Librarian for Information Literacy at the University of Tennesse, Knoxville, Carly McCann is a doctoral student in economics (focusing on feminist economics) at the University of Massachussets Amherst, and Anna MArtine Whitehead is a performance artist, composer, and assistant professor.

These accomplished professionals shared what they’ve learned from their WGSS education, their career paths after graduating, and very relevant and helpful advice for current students. Some key pieces of advice are: your job isn’t your whole identity, things aren’t always going to go as planned--and that’s okay, research the company before you accept the job, and be open to different types of opportunities that you didn’t expect to connect with.
