WGSS Spring Communications Internship Applications Now Open!

The Harriet Tubman Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies is excited to announce the WGSS Communications Internship, a new opportunity for students with a connection to the department to combine interest in digital and print communications with their interest in Feminist and queer studies.
Position Description
6-8 hrs/week
Location: Hybrid (at least 50% in person in SQH 3121)
Responsibilities
- Work with staff and event organizers to develop graphics and copy for print and digital marketing for the department such as:
- Weekly department e-newsletter
- Monthly graduate student e-newsletter
- WGSS/LGBT/BWST course publicity
- Departmental events such as the WGSS Speaker Series Guest Lectures
- Large Community events like the Harriet Tubman Day Commemoration and the DC Queer Studies Symposium
- Assist with brainstorming, pitch, and design of other types of marketing materials such as stickers and pins
- Conduct research to pitch potential student organization collaborations and social media partnership opportunities
- Post or deliver printed flyers and marketing materials around campus
- Outreach to relevant groups and organizations
- Help maintain departmental contact information including marketing email lists, alumni, and donor records
- Research and pitch new methods for connecting with students who may be interested in WGSS programs.
- Occasional administrative support such as making copies and answering phone calls
- Support online and in-person events as needed
Qualifications
- Sophomore standing or higher
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Excellent organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and in group settings
- Experience using social media planning tools like Hootsuite and Metricool preferred
- Experience creating posts for Instagram, Twitter, Bluesky, Facebook, TikTok, and Linkedin preferred
- Graphic design experience in Canva, Adobe Express, or Adobe Creative Cloud Suite preferred

Receiving Internship Credit
Students can receive internship credit by registering for 3 or 4 credits of WGSS 368 depending on the number of hours they will be working. Students can repeat this internship for up to 9 credits. Students who want to use this for other majors or minors should discuss how with Gwen Warman and their major advisor.
