Harriet Tubman Day Celebration

College of Arts and Humanities | The Harriet Tubman Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Wednesday, March 10, 2021 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm Virtual

The Harriet Tubman Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies will host their first annual celebration of Harriet Tubman Day—to mark the department’s name change—on Wednesday, March 10, from 1-3 p.m. Speakers include Ernestine (Tina) Wyatt, a descendant of Harriet Tubman and a UMD alum, as well as faculty and students who have been inspired to draw on Harriet Tubman’s legacy in their work.

In summer 2020, the Department of Women Studies was renamed The Harriet Tubman Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, culminating a two-year effort by faculty, staff and administrators. This event celebrates the new name and Harriet Tubman’s remarkable legacy.

  • Featured Speaker: Ernestine (Tina) Wyatt, Descendant of Harriet Tubman, and UMD Alum

1:30-1:35 p.m. 

  • Department Video: What the Name Change Means to Us

1:35-2 p.m.

  • Pedagogy Roundtable: Incorporating Harriet Tubman's Story

2-2:30 p.m.  

  • Student Art and Performance Showcase

2:30-3 p.m.

  • Faculty Closing Remarks

Students are invited to submit creative works for the art and performance showcase. Submissions are due February 22, 2021 to wgss@umd.edu, more information is available here.
